Gameplay and plot[edit]

Scanner Sombre Monster

Scanner Sombre is explorationvideo game played from a first-person perspective.[1][2] The player awakens in a tent inside a cave; after finding an augmented reality headset and a LIDAR scanner, the player can illuminate the surrounding environment using dots. As the protagonist traverses the cave, they note that no one has gone this deep into the mine before; they find evidence of a cultist monastery who performed sacrifices as well as witch-hunts, as well as various remnants of mining expeditions, a lot of which ended in tragedy. When approaching such scenes, the protagonist's vision occasionally glitches out, which the protagonist attributes to hardware failure, but also notes that there have been rumors about the cave containing ghosts. Occasionally the player can find upgrades to the scanner that unlock various features, such as more dense scanning or a map.

As the game progresses, the protagonist begins to remember the past and it is eventually revealed that the trek is not headed deeper into the mine, but out of it. It is revealed that the protagonist ventured so deep into the mine that they eventually died there, and they are now reliving their dying memories while their family mourns them on the surface. Once the protagonist encounters their family, they are slowly transported back down through the caves they explored all the way to the starting tent, and the dots illuminating the mine slowly disappear. The player regains control and can go pick up the scanner again, but this time the protagonist is shocked to see that their arms are made entirely of glowing dots.

Restarting the game in 'New Game+' mode and using the 'material scanner' mode available on the scanner at the start, the player can find their dead body that was otherwise blending into the terrain in 'distance scanner' mode.

Development and release[edit]

Scanner Sombre was developed by Introversion Software.[2] A prototype of the game was showcased at EGX Rezzed in early 2016.[3] The prototype was developed in one month during 2015 by several members at the studio while they were working on content updates for their previous game Prison Architect.[1] The game was released for macOS and Windows on 26 April 2017.[2] The game took 9 months to develop.[4]

Virtual reality compatibility has been implemented into the game post-release, supporting both the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, and was released in late June 2017.[5]

Scanner Sombre received 'mixed or average' reviews from professional critics according to review aggregator website Metacritic.[6]

The game sold only 6000 copies upon its release. Introversion Software's Chris Delay claimed that the developer was very disappointed with the game's sales and that it had 'bombed in a big way'.[4]

The game's defining characteristic is that the entire environment is pitch black, and the protagonist, lacking a flashlight, must rely on a LIDAR geological scanner hooked up to VR-like visualization goggles in order to see anything.

Scanner Sombre provides examples of:

  • Art Shift: The ending shows your family as plainly visible textured 3D models.
  • Barred from the Afterlife: The myths say, you die in the cave, you never leave.
  • Dead All Along: You.
  • Electromagnetic Ghosts: The screen glitches out and you can briefly see flickers of people in their final moments when you're near them.
  • 'Groundhog Day' Loop: A recurring theme brought up early on is that people believe those who die in the cave are trapped forever, repeatedly living out their final moments. The protagonist learned first-hand that the myths are true.
  • Advertisement:
  • Human Sacrifice: Implied to be the cultists' motivations for throwing people into the chasm.
  • Interface Screw: The scanner goggles do NOT like getting wet. See also Ominous Visual Glitch.
  • New Game+: You can start from the beginning with all the scanner upgrades, allowing you to see certain details in the initial areas you couldn't before, including your own corpse close to the starting tent.
  • Ominous Visual Glitch: When you get close to an anomaly, the screen starts glitching out and you get brief glimpses of it.
  • Religion of Evil: A cult living deep in the cave would ritually throw people into a deep chasm to their deaths.
  • Sound-Coded for Your Convenience: The scanner makes distinctive buzzing noises when its lasers are hitting something supernatural.
  • Tomato Surprise: You're dead, continually reliving your final moments, never to see your family again.

  • Wham Line: It's foreshadowed a bit, but: 'I don't know how I died.'
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: While every other anomaly in the game is tied into a tragedy in their respective area, the first ghost you meet, who later jumpscares you in the room full of bridges, is never explained.
  • Who Forgot the Lights?: Invoked and cranked up to the absolute extreme. The scanner dots are the only way you can see anything.
